As for any disease, Prevention is better than Cure and vaccination is the best way to prevent it. Mandatory vaccines are suggested to avoid dangerous childhood disease, while optional vaccines target common yet less harmful diseases. Children will need several doses of these vaccines to get maximum protection. It is necessary to follow the prescribed schedule of doses.

Government of India’s latest guidelines lists Mandatory and Optional vaccines for babies as follows:

Mandatory vaccines

  • Hepatitis B
  • Varicella
  • MMR
  • OPV vaccine
  • DPT vaccine
  • Hepatitis A
  • Typhoid
  • Rotavirus

Optional vaccines

  • HiB (haemophilus influenzae type B)
  • PCV (Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine)
  • IPV (Inactivated Polio Vaccine)
